Welcome to Cyprus!

In the following pages we will give you information about driving on the roads of Cyprus.

Although some of the items are specific to Cyprus, much of the driving advice will apply to wherever you are in the world.

There is currently no official Cyprus Highway Code. There is one in the pipeline which has been agreed by Parliament but it is unlikely to be published before the end of 2009. It will besimilar to and have the same legal standing as the UK publication in that it will not in itself be an offence to contravene it, but can be used to assist a prosecution.

If you drive according to the UK Highway Code you shouldn't go far wrong.

In Cyprus traffic drives on the left.
  • Most traffic signs will be recognizable as they conform to EU standards.
  • Speed limit signs are in Kilometers Per Hour (Kph)
  • Information signs are in Greek and English, with some now in Turkish.
  • The standard of driving is generally poor. (See common driving problems section)
  • The drink driving limit is now a lot lower than in the UK. (See Police and offences section)
  • All occupants of vehicles must wear seatbelts.
  • Mobile phone use is prohibited. (Hands free is permitted by law but not advisable as it impairs concentration).
  • Crash helmets are required to be warn for all mopeds and motorcycles.
  • Traffic laws in general are similar to those in the UK. For a comprehensive list of offences click here. I have highlighted several in red that may be considered of interest, particularly to visitors.

  • Whatever the season, always carry with you a pair of sunglasses. It is likely you will travel towards the sun at some stage of your travels, as the coast runs east / west.

During the summer it is a good idea to carry some bottled water. Dehydration is a dangerous condition and adversely affects a driver to the detriment of road safety.

I hope you find the site of interest whether you live on the island or are proposing a visit here.

Have a pleasant trip and enjoy your driving.
