The Cyprus Driving Test.

Only Cyprus residents who can prove they have lived in the country for six months can apply for a Cyprus provisional / learner driving licence and take a Cyprus Driving Test.
Provisional / learner licence are only valid in the Country of issue.

There is currently no official Cyprus Highway Code. There is one in the pipeline which has been agreed by Parliament but it is unlikely to be published before the end of 2009. It will be similar to and have the same legal standing as the UK publication in that it will not in itself be an offence to contravene it, but can be used to assist a prosecution.

If you drive according to the UK Highway Code you won't go far wrong.

The driving test application form T.O.M. 25A is obtainable from the DoRT - but only available in Greek. For a printable translation in PDF format click here.

The test fee is €10.25.

It is possible to pay an extra €34.17 to take the test sooner. This is to pay the examiner to work overtime. The test will be in the afternoon, after normal working hours. However, 31 days must elapse between the issue of a provisional licence and the test.

If you fail the test an interval of 30 days must elapse before it can be retaken.

Taking the driving test in your own vehicle
You will be required to produce:
  • Your driving Licence.
  • Insurance cover note which specifically covers your use of the vehicle on the day of the test and for the purpose of taking the driving test.
  • MOT (if required).
  • The vehicle must display L plates front and rear.

The Cyprus Driving Test:
Consists of a short verbal theory test of about 8 or more questions on traffic signs and the highway code, similar to that taken when applying for a provisional licence.
The practical test takes about 35 minutes and consists of a drive on the local roads and includes some maneuvering for example parallel parking.
The result is given at the end of the test.

If you take your test in an automatic car and pass, you will only be able to drive automatics on your full licence. A pass in a car with a manual gearbox will enable you to drive both types of vehicle.

The waiting list for a test is currently between three and four months.

The Cyprus Motorcycle Test:

Consists of a short verbal theory test of about 8 or more questions on traffic signs and the highway code, similar to that taken when applying for a provisional licence.

A practical motorcycle riding test has been introduced. It is similar to that in the UK and involves the examiner following the pupil on a road route. The type of motor scooter used by the examiner carrying out the new motorcycle test is pictured left. Communication is by radio link via helmet headsets. The ride itself takes about half an hour.

However it is possible that if the weather is inclement or they are particularly busy, the road test may be substituted by the old test. This involves driving in the confines of the driving test centre, slowly around a circuit of cones. You will be expected to carry out an emergency stop.

Motor scooters are either motorcycles or mopeds depending on their engine size and specification.

Driving test pass rates by category and by province from 1-1-2007 to 31-12-2007 Click here

Changes to the Theory Test
The Department of Transport have put out to tender for the supply of computers required for adopting a UK style driving theory test for Cyprus.

To prepare yourself for the test you will find some very useful information on driving techniques, including "how to" video clips on this site.
